REVISED: 5/3/07

INFORMATION NEEDED

Listed here are aircraft about which we found little or no info over the years. Some lack constructors' names or home bases, some have basic descriptions, others have nothing but a mention found in some old magazine or book. Some are ancient, some are recent, some are only paper tigers.

However, and that's a big however, somebody out there knows something about a plane listed here, maybe even two, or more. There might be a photo in an old family album, or maybe someone who worked on one of these, or even flew one, but information that is vital to history is still out there waiting to be discovered.

Many could be merely re-names of commercial aircraft, many could be rebuilds or kits but, whatever, they all play a role in American aviation history and it's important to document them before the fog of time rolls in and they are lost forever. So, kindly check your attic, your basement, that photo album. Inquire at a local museum and historical society. Emails to aerofiles@comcast.net or aero@airex.org

UPDATE: 4.5 down, only 225 more to go ... Eichmann info supplied by Michael Morrow. Dennis Parks (curator, Museum of Flight) sent an ad from a 1917 magazine that showed not the (Kyle) Smith pusher we have listed, but a tractor that we didn't know even existed. Murphy Mouse epic came in from Jim Strothers, and Jack Erickson brought Aerotek Call-Air back to Wyoming, and Chris Kinnaman supplied Falconar facts. Hey, are we on a roll or what?

1913 = Two-motored design, type unknown, but this date would indicate it as the first twin ever built in the US. Records are unclear, and there is thought that the ship might have actually been constructed from Purcell's plans by Jay Gage in Glendale CA. However, the Roy Francis plane of the same time and general location (qv), also a twin, could be the same machine, perhaps sold by one to the other, or just a major mix-up by whomever was doing the original documentation.
1916 = 1pOB tractor, in which Purcell set a speed record by flying from San Jose to Sacramento in 40 minutes.
1917 = A cabin aircraft, type unknown, was designed and built in San Francisco, with a celluloid-enclosed cockpit. A claim of Purcell operating the first flying service in the San Francisco Bay Area about this time is challenged by the Christofferson brothers' commercial ventures in 1913-14. However, a documented claim to fame, obloquial as it was, is that in 1922 Purcell was the first California aviator to be arrested for flying without a license.
